I'm reading On the Road again at the moment which makes my bus journeys far less tiresome, it's also giving me some really good ideas, the book has done that for so many people it's unbelieveable. I have far too many plans at the moment, I really should filter through them at some point.
As much as I enjoy Kerouac's writing, it really grinds on me. Not his text, but rather the influence that his writing has had. People think that if they work by his exaggerated logic and just type, type, type, with no care whatsoever then the quality is still going to be there in the end. I've seen it myself when reading people who I know love Kerouac, but their work comes out as garbage. I might be a writing snob here (which is wholly unjustified) but it really does annoy me, even more so when I have to edit the piece! I just want a little more love in the script that I have to read, I'm far more likely to enjoy it if I don't have to wade through the rubbish. Truman Capote got it right, but I think people take Kerouac's comments on writing far to literally.
Anyway, back to my writing escapades. The scripts that I've completed so far have been well-received, a few niggles here and there but it's all very minor. I can feel the quality improving as I work on every new script, each idea feels more original than the next so hopefully they will stand out. I have a complete set of first drafts for one character almost completed, they just need a final read through and then they will be ready to send. It's all very exciting!
I look forward to Jack Kerouac rescuing me from the abyss of bus boredom tomorrow.
